A banana tree only bears one crop of bananas, after which it is chopped down to make room for new plantation.
The
old banana trees pose an environmental problem of disposal. So by
making use of the remains, we can help reduce pollution of rivers and
ponds. At the same time, by turning these trees into paper, we avoid
cutting down other longer-lasting trees.
About 4% of the weight
of a banana tree trunk is made up of fibre, which serves as an
excellent source of strength and raw material for paper.
This exotic tropical fibre adds character and texture to paper, hence making it attractive and enticing.
Banana
paper is free of acid and lignin. Lignin is a natural component of wood
and over time, it breaks down and becomes acidic. The acid in the paper
causes fade of photos over time. Therefore, amongst other things,
banana paper is ideal for storing and sending photos.
We
currently offer a range of 4 sizes of envelopes, C5, C6, DL and 155
square, along with matching A4 sheets of paper. Each size comes in 3
different colours, blue, cream and pink, and 2 different finishes in
each colour, a wove and a fleck.
Since banana paper is
hand-made, the colour and finish may vary from envelope to envelope.
Please note also that only limited quantities are available.
